A 46-year-old sub-contractor at Denver International Airport was killed by a sweeper on runway 16L. He was working to remove tire pieces from the runway. The workplace accident happened early in the morning on Monday.

The sub-contractor was cleaning rubber pieces off the runway when he was hit by a large sweeper.

"The man had apparently bent over to retrieve an item and could not be seen by the operator of the heavy equipment," said Detective John White.

The victim worked for Rampart Hydro Services. The accident closed the runway for several hours. OSHA will be investigating the accident along with the local police department.
