I blogged last week on Texas having the most 18-wheeler traffic fatalities and reading the local newspaper this weekend further confirms the subject. A tractor trailer carrying recyclable cardboard swerved across a median killing one person instantly and seriously injuring the occupants of two other vehicles. A 13-year old boy was among the injured. The driver of the 18-wheeler could not remember what happened.

Truckers occupy our two major highways I-10 and I-35 which I'm sure contributes to Texas having the most 18-wheeler traffic fatalities. As previously discussed in my earlier post our nation’s highways would be much safer if the trucking industry regulated the speed of large trucks. It is unclear with this recent 18-wheeler fatality in San Antonio if speed played a factor.

Another problem with 18-wheelers is the amount of time they spend on the road increasing the chance of accidents. The average time truckers are on the road is 10 to 15 hours at a time. That is a very long time to be on the road operating an 80,000 lb. truck.

I think the interstates should be open only to 18-wheelers. They are doing their job. Everyone else should get out of the way and take the scenic route. Without them, you would go to the grocery store and gas station and there wouldn't be anything there for you to buy. That house or apartment you live in couldn't be built without them. And they are not allowed to drive 15 hours at a time. Call any Texas DPS office and ask.

I know this is a controversial topic for a lot of people. My grandfather owned a transport business in southern California and my uncle is still a truck driver while his wife is a dispatcher. Regulation is the answer. We are safer with 18-wheelers on the road today than we were ten years ago thanks to rules limiting consecutive hours of driving, GPS systems that track speed and movement, and issues of liability. You better believe that truckers know that they are operating death traps and I should hope they take the responsibility seriously. We need big rigs, but we also need to be allowed to use the roads we (as taxpayers) pay for. The public needs to be educated on how to drive with big rigs on the road. I am sure that we can survive if we can learn to coexist.
