A comment on Sex Offenders in Nursing Homes

Absolutely agree with the above- residents safety has to be a primary motivator for all care providers. Whereforcare.com is the carehomes and senior care ratings and reviews website where those who have experience of various care and nursing facilities such as residents, relatives and visiting professionals can help to inform others who are looking for senior care on how to make the best choice. If you can write a review of a senior care facility to help others choose the right care, please feel free to do so!

A comment on $11 Million Verdict in Assisted Living Case

This case was a complete sham & the jury didn't do their job. The circumstances surrounding this case do not warrant the verdict that was determined. What this article doesn't state is that the two coroner's who performed the autopsy disagreed on the cause of death. One stated Mr. Scherrer died from ingestion of a foreign object the other stated he died of drowning, and Mr. Scherrer was actually found dead in his wife's home in her bathtub. The jury found this assisted living home guilty for wrongful death when they should have dismissed the case to resolve the discrepancy regarding the actual cause of the death. Justice was not done here & it's a shame this case is going to be used against other assisted living homes in litigation because of its monumental (and grossly inappropriate) verdict. There are many more facts of this case that are not posted, and too many to go into detail here. Lydia Scherrer is, in my opinion, a scam artist and I think in a medical case, such as this one, the jury should be required to have knowledge of biological processes before they can be placed in a position to make this kind of history. The system is broken.

A comment on Lack of State Investigations into Nursing Homes

I would just like to make a comment. The demonstration of the lift was very nicely done, however, there wasn't a lot of conversation with the patient/resident. It is very important to keep a running commentary of what you are doing to let the person know what is coming next. This encourages cooperation. When someone is lifted up high, it can be very scary.
Otherwise it was an excellent, caring demonstration.
Thank you

A comment on Medication Abuse in the Elderly by Nursing Homes

I am a consultant pharmacist with certification in geriatric pharmacy who has worked in nursing facilities for over 20 yrs. Per federal regulations (which are very strict!!) I review resident's charts every month for misuse of these meds among other things.
You are seriously distorting the meaning of the article in the NY Times. Nursing facilities are cited( and heavily fined) if they are allowing the use of unnecessary medications, including antipsychotics. If a physician is prescribing these unnecessarily, and the facility is allowing this to happen without monitoring, they incur heavy fines, which cuts into their profit margin. Believe me, they don't allow this to happen!
We do have problems with physicians doing this from time to time (mainly psychiatrists),but with recommendations from the consultant pharmacist, director of nursing, and the medical director of the facility, they learn to document why they are prescribing these, and gradually reducing the dose until they are no longer needed.
In the past, it is true that residents did receive antipsychotics for agitation. Now, I only see it in residents being discharged from the hospital-that is where you need to focus your scrutiny.
Mary E Scott, RPh, CGP
