Many nursing homes are understaffed in Texas. One problem which results from understaffing is elderly patients develop bedsores or decubitus ulcers. Many bed bound patients require being turned frequently. The staff at the nursing homes is often overworked or simply not very conscientious, so turning the patient is often overlooked. Bedsores can become very large and painful and can be difficult to heal, even deadly. Recently a jury awarded a $29 million punitive damages to a family whose loved one died as a result of the bedsores.
