In Marshall, Texas, residents recently received notices that there were high levels of organic compounds in the water supply. However, city officials insist the water is safe to drink. There have also been water safety issues in the Texas Panhandle area. In Pampa Texas, where there has been intensive oil and gas production over the years, the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District has found higher than normal amounts of chloride in the groundwater. A few weeks ago, north San Antonio residents had to boil their water after a contractor disrupted a water main. Even though San Antonio Water System officials restored water to the area, they were concerned and needed to test the water to ensure bacteria or microbes were not in the drinking water.

Generally our water here in Texas is extremely safe to drink. But as noted above there are potential hazards that can affect our drinking supply. San Antonio water drinkers can visit the SAWS web site for more information. In addition, federal information on water quality standards can also be found on the EPA’s website. If we stay informed, we can help make sure our drinking water stays drinkable.
