Major Brands of Pet Food Recalled

A manufacturer of dog and cat food based in Canada has issued a large recall of our 60 million units of pet food. The recall includes major brands such as Iams, Eukanuba and Nutro as well as store brand food. The contaminated food can cause kidney failure in dogs and cats. All food was manufactured by Menu Foods.

Roger Freund, past president of the El Paso Veterinary Medical Association, said he had no reported cases of animals being affected by eating the recalled food at his West Side practice.

"The main thing to watch for with any kidney disease is loss of appetite, drinking more water than usual and urinating a lot more than usual," Freund said.

The problem is when an animal is showing those signs, the kidney damage is already advanced, he said. If it's a chronic problem, not much can be done, but if it's an acute problem caused by a toxin, it might be possible to reverse the problem with high doses of intravenous fluids, he said.

Retailers are clearing their shelves of the recalled products and offering refunds. You may call your veterinarian or retailer for more information.
