Last week, Federal regulators threatened to pull funding from Christus Santa Rose Hospital - Medical Center heart transplant program.

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is giving the hospital 30 days to submit acceptable plans to overhaul the program and if they are unable to do so, they will lose federal funding.

Medicare requires the hospital to perform at least 12 heart transplants annually to ensure proficiency.

Since last year, eight transplant programs have agreed to forgo federal money, another five are operating under corrective plans approved by Medicare, and one, BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln, Neb., has had its funding pulled.
