Edith Isabel Rodriguez went to Martin Luther King Jr. - Harbor Hospital on May 9, 2006. She was vomiting blood and writhing in pain for 45 minutes in the waiting area of the emergency room.

Ms. Rodriguez died of a perforated bowel and her death was ruled accidental by the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Experts have testified Ms. Rodriguez could have survived had she been treated.

Edith Rodriguez's boyfriend, Jose Prado, called 911 while in the emergency room asking for help because the nurses would not help her. The 911 dispatcher told him to contact a doctor and said the paramedics would not pick her up because she was already at a hospital.

Another women called 911 eight minutes later trying to get help for Ms. Rodriguez. She was told that it was not an emergency and refused to call paramedic. Again, the dispatcher referred her to contact the hospital supervisors.

It was reported she died when police arrested her on a parole violation. Sheriff's Department still has on ongoing investigation on this matter.

I am a RN. NO one, especially a nurse should be so arrogant that they assume nothing is wrong with a person. RN's should help people no matter if they are in your neighborhood, your church, at the grocery store and especially in your emergency room while you are getting paid. I feel so terrible for the Rodriguez family. I hope they consider the negligence of the physician's as well for prescribing pain medications and missing the obstruction or whatever caused her perforation. Pain medications would only add to a blockage. Ridiculous. It is not that difficult to properly diagnose a bowel obstruction. I hope the entire nursing staff/medical staff as well as any employee who did not speak up and try to help, including the police officer is brought up on charges. In almost 20 years in the medical profession, this one takes the cake. I am going to start working as a legal nurse consultant and this is a prime example as to why.
