A report was recently released by the San Antonio Police Department regarding crashes and fatalities in San Antonio in 2006.  The following is a list of the top 10 locations with the most accidents:

1st:       U.S. Highway 281 N and Loop 1604 E

  • SAPD recorded 280 accidents.  This intersection "has been the number one location for crashes for the past three years," according to the report.  Two major freeways intersecting controlled by four signal lights and a very high volume of traffic.

2nd:      Ingram Road and Loop 410 NW

  • SAPD recorded 236 accidents in 2006

3rd:      Interstate Highway 35 N and U.S. Highway 281

  • SAPD recorded 171 accidents in 2006. This is in the downtown area and a very high volume of traffic.

4th:       Loop 1604 NW and Bandera Road

  • SAPD recorded 159 accidents in 2006. This is a diamond interchange and a lot of development with high volume traffic.

5th:       Interstate Highway 10 W and Loop 1604 NW

  • SAPD recorded 151 accidents in 2006.  This is a clover leaf intersection and also a very high volume of traffic.

6th:       Interstate Highway 10 W and Wurzbach Road

  • SAPD recorded 134 accidents in 2006.  This is a diamond interchange with a lot of development and a highly traveled area near USAA and the medical center.

7th:       Loop 410 NE and Perrin Beitel Road

  • SAPD recorded 131 accidents in 2006.  This is a diamond interchange controlled by signals.

8th:       U.S. Highway 281 and Bitters Road

  • SAPD recorded 130 accidents in 2006.  This is a diamond interchange controlled by signals with a lot of driveways on the frontage roads causing more traffic and high volume areas.

9th:       San Pedro Avenue and Rector Drive

  • SAPD recorded 124 accidents in 2006.  This is a city-maintained intersection and the Texas Department of Transportation and does not collect information about it.

10th:     Loop 410 NE and Interstate Highway 10 E

  • SAPD recorded 123 accidents in 2006.  This is a cloverleaf interchange and currently under construction with a high traffic volume.

There are several objectives in performing accident analyses including:

1.                  to help identify high accident locations;

2.                  to evaluate alternative corrective treatments;

3.                  to determine the effectiveness of corrective treatments subsequent to their implementation by comparison of before versus after the accident occurs;

4.                  to aid in the planning process for the development of future projects.

Due to San Antonio’s growth and ever increasing population, accident analyses can be very beneficial in the upcoming years to help alleviate traffic accidents in high traffic areas.
