Texans Get $31.8 Million Verdict in Fatal Wreck

Jurors ruled that Allied Van Lines should pay $31.8 million to a group of Texans. The moving van slammed into traffic that was stopped due to a minor traffic accident throwing an SUV into the air, catching fire, killing two people and seriously burning two others.

Lisa Guerra and her friend Joe Alfaro were awarded 70 percent of the money for medical expenses, lost earning capacity, disfigurement and pain and suffering. Lisa Guerra, 20 years old at the time of the wreck, was burned over two-thirds of her body and was awarded $9.1 million. Joe Alfaro, also 20 years old at the time of the wreck, was burned over 85% of his body and was awarded $13.1 million. Lisa Guerra's sister, Cindy Guerra, 18, and their cousin Jennifer Garza, 9, were killed in the wreck. Their parents were awarded $6.25 million and $3.25 million respectively.

The jury deliberated for 6 ½ hours before returning their verdict.
