Pilot Program to Ban Cell Phones in Certain School Zones(2)

With back to school starting in less than two weeks, council members are trying to get a pilot program banning cell phone use in school zones passed. The pilot program has been scaled back from it’s initial proposal. San Antonio Council Member, Justin Rodriguez, originally proposed a cell phone ban in all school zones in San Antonio. Later it was decided that proposal would be too costly to implement. They have narrowed down the ban to 24 “high incident school zones”, meaning school zones with the most incidents of speeders.

Children are known to dart out into traffic without any warning. If a driver is on their cell phone their attention is not 100% on the road which can lead to tragic accidents and death. City Council is expected to vote on this pilot program by next Thursday. If it passes, signs banning cell phone use in the designated school zone areas should be up within a few days of the vote.
