Next week Ford Motor Co. will begin recalling as many as 109,664 police cars due to cracks developing in their steel wheels that could cause rapid tire air loss during high-speed pursuits. The recall affects 2003 - 2005 Crown Victoria models but the cracks have only been reported in a small percentage of wheels.

Ford spokesman, Dan Jarvis, said police departments have only reported two crashes related to the wheel problem, but Ford is disputing those claims. On Monday, dealers will inspect and replace the wheels according to wheel part numbers.

"Although Ford has not identified an unreasonable risk to safety from this condition, we have decided to conduct this voluntary safety recall to avoid a protracted dispute with the agency," Smith's letter to NHTSA said.

The number of vehicles actually recalled will be much lower than 109,664 because a number of the cars are no longer used as police pursuit vehicles.
